Alice R. Weil Obituary
Alice Rae Clark was born August 21, 1927 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and was adopted by Karna and Ira Clark. She was raised as an only child by her single mom and grandma Smith through the lean years after the Depression. She graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1945. Her future husband, Ray Weil, had come from Pennsylvania after WWII to visit his brother, Jim, who was an acquaintance of Alice. They were married November 3, 1947.
Ray was hired by Colorado Interstate Gas in 1953 to work in Lakin, Kansas. Two years later, they relocated to Eads. She went back to work in the lunch room at Eads Public Schools and then worked at Peoples Natural Gas for 11 years until it closed. She then went to work at Farm Bureau Insurance until her retirement. As a part-time employee, she began keeping the books at Michaels Truck Stop. Never one to be inactive, she became an assistant on the County bus.
Some of Alices volunteer efforts included: Hospital Auxiliary Board, Eads Housing Committee and for many years she delivered Meals on Wheels. She was on the board that initialized the SHARE for Colorado food distribution. She was the Treasurer and ticket salesperson for the Kiowa County Jamboree Cactus Players. She was also a volunteer at the local museum once a week. She was always involved in the beautification projects for the town of Eads. More recently, she volunteered once a month at the Salvation Army. Alice has served the United Methodist Church in many capacities ranging from janitor to Sunday School teacher, which she did for over 30 years. She also sat on many church committees and boards as well. She will also be remembered for organizing many family funeral dinners throughout the years.
In 1993, she was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and in 2003 was given the distinguished honor of Citizen of the Year by the local Masonic Lodge.
Alice R. Weil died on April 16, 2008 at the Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado. Alice was pre-deceased by her husband Ray in 1980, her daughter-in-law, Marcia Weil in 2003, her son Robert also in 2003 and her grandson Gunner in 2006. Although Alice discovered several years ago that she was adopted, it wasnt until her grand daughter, Betsy Cooper, put her in touch with a genealogical expert that she was finally able to discover her family history. She made a trip to Oklahoma where she was able to meet and spend some time with her mothers best friend. Through this trip, she discovered her roots and learned about her biological family.
A celebration of Alices life was held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eads, CO with pastor Gary Goettel officiating.
