Bud Bennett was born on December 18, 1936, in Denver, Colorado, to Wilbur LeRoy and Esther Ida (Bauer) Bennett. A lifelong public servant, Bud dedicated more than thirty years of his life to helping others, working as a paramedic, police officer, and even a dog catcher—roles that reflected his unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of his community.

In 1976, Bud married the love of his life, Dixie W. Weber. Together, they built a life marked by adventure, service, and connection, living in various Colorado communities including Lakewood, Vail, Minturn, Nathrop, Edgewater, and eventually settling in Dixie’s hometown of Eads.

After retiring from public service, Bud embraced a new passion: square dance calling. As a high-end Square Dance Caller, he spent over two decades bringing joy to others through music and movement. His talent and dedication made him one of only two people in the country recognized at that level, and he and Dixie built cherished friendships across the nation through the square dance community.

Bud was a man of many interests, but he was especially known for his vast and unique collections. His home held more than 4,000 movies and documentaries, and an extraordinary collection of over 1,000 flags from countries, states, provinces, and communities around the world. Fondly nicknamed “the flag man,” Bud took great pride in displaying flags outside his home to mark holidays and special occasions, a colorful and meaningful reflection of his curiosity and patriotism.

On July 8, 2025, Bud passed away in Arvada, Colorado, following a brief illness. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dixie Bennett, and his children: Randy (Dana) Bennett of Superior, CO; Chris Bennett of De Beque, CO; and Tammy (Dan) Thomas of Arvada, CO. He is also survived by four grandchildren—Brad (Ashley), Sean (Paige), Kelsey, and Ryan—and two great-grandchildren, Claire and Tristan. Bud is lovingly remembered by his sister, Fran Hahn of Buena Vista, CO, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Carol, and one brother, Phil.

Bud's life was defined by service, passion, and connection. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the traditions he cherished. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in honor of Bud’s generous spirit.
