Daniel James Radebaugh Obituary

Daniel J. Radebaugh of Kit Carson, Colorado passed away into the hands of our Lord on June 25, 2009 at the Cheyenne Manor in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.


He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather, and friend to everyone who knew him.


Dan was born in Flagler, Colorado on March 22, 1920 to Cleo Radebaugh and Ella (Quincy) Radebaugh. He grew up in the Flagler, Seibert, and Arroya communities. He attended school in Arroya. He had to quit 9th grade to help take care of his younger brothers and sisters. Then he was assigned to the CCC workmans camp where he worked on building roads and bridges, etc. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, after basic training leaving Ft. Louis, Washington for England. He was part of the Armeta of Men, landed in France on D-Day June 6, 1941. He later went to Germany and Holland. He was discharged October 2, 1945. He was a life-time member of the Kit Carson VFW Post 3411 serving several offices.


While in the Army he wrote letters to Pauline Winn of Flagler, Colorado. Later after returning home from the service they were married on February 16, 1946, in St. Francis, Kansas. Pauline had two sons from a previous marriage, he fell very very close to. To this union four children were born, Barbara Louise, Daniel Duane, Scottie Joe and June Lynette.


Dan was a cowboy growing up, a farmer, a school bus driver, and a mechanic in the Flagler, Seibert areas, and in Kit Carson he worked for Walt Steiner as a mechanic until he retired in 1966 due to health problems. In 1967, he and his family moved to Kansas where he worked for a farmer for several years. From there they moved to Flagler, Colorado and then to Stratton, Colorado where he worked for Tom McCormick as a cattle feeders. In 1980, he and Pauline moved back to Kit Carson where they retired and continued to live.


After retirement he helped a friend, Bud Nicolarson on his ranch taking care of cattle until he got so he couldnt do it any longer. He did some lawn mowing for friends and neighbors until he could not do it any longer.


He is survived by his daughter Barbara (Leon) Patterson of Columbiana, Alabama; step-son Jim Winn of Kit Carson, Colorado, 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, brothers John (Evelyn) Radebaugh of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Alvin (Jessie) Radebaugh of Flagler, Colorado, Bob (Shirley) Radebaugh of Grand Junction, Colorado, Gene (Sharon) Radebaugh of Stigler, Oklahoma, sisters Vivian Morford of Moab, Utah, Betty (Paul) Hudson of Salem, Missouri, and Pauline (Dick) Litherland of Goddard, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.


Dan is preceded in death by his wife Pauline of 61 years, two sons, Scottie Joe and Daniel Duane Radebaugh, step-son Robert A Winn, and daughter June Lynette Daniel, parents Cleo and Ella Radebaugh, brothers Dick and Floyd Radebaugh and sisters Mabel Morford and Mary Dockery.

Funeral services were held June 30, 2009 at the Kit Carson United Methodist Church with Rev. Burry Bessee officiating. Music was provided by pianist Marilyn Bullock and soloist Doris Lessenden. Graveside committal services were held at the Flagler Cemetery in Flagler, Colorado with the Flagler American Legion And Kit Carson VFW Post #3411 conducting the Military service.


Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheyenne Manor Nursing Home in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.
