Deloris June Richards (better known as Corky) was born on June 26, 1934 in Burlington, Colorado. She passed away on July 6, 2007.

Corky was the daughter of Karl and Nell (Rohren) Huenergardt. She has two sisters, Betty Baker and Karol Bergquist, both of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado.


Most of her 73 years of life were spent in Cheyenne County with brief tenures in Mississippi, Michigan, Kansas and Oregon. She retuned to Cheyenne County to stay in 1964, driving from the coast of Oregon to Eastern Colorado, single with six children ranging in age from 15 to one year old. It was probably the thought of the return trip that made Arapahoe our home.


During her working years, she bartended at the Cheyenne Bar, managed the Starlite Lounge, owned and operated the High Chaparral and later opened the Phoenix Restaurant. When the Phoenix closed as a restaurant, it became the Kid's Klub Daycare. She also worked at Gambles and the hospital as a nurse's aid.


Corky's service to the community included elected to the Arapahoe School Board, volunteering as a EMT in Cheyenne County, serving as the County Coroner and the sponsorship of many community events.


She is survived by five children - Donna of Las Vegas, NV; Michael and his wife Margie of Ballwin, MO; Patrick and Russell, both of Portland, OR; and Sandra Jaacks and her husband, Matt of Flandreau, SD.


Corky was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Richards in 2005 and her son Douglas in 1984.


She was always the first to offer help, but the last to ask for help. Corky was a very upbeat person who lived life her way. She will be missed!


Memorial services for Corky were held Saturday, July 14th at the Arapahoe Community Church with Reverend Tom Burch officiating. Pianist was Deanne Martin and the vocalist was Kelly Beek who sang The Old Rugged Cross and County Your Blessings.
