Dickie Lee Root was born February 25, 1930 in Chivington, CO to Abraham Dick and Fern Root. He departed this life on November 30, 2010 in Lamar, Colorado with his wife and sons by his side. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, sisters Marge Osborn and Pearl Hainer and brother Donald Root. He is survived by his wife Juanita of their home in Lamar, CO his stepmother Mae Root of Lamar, CO his sons Kenneth and wife Mary of Lamar, CO; Doug and wife Connie of Westcliffe, CO; and James and wife Ann of Topeka, KS; four grandchildren and one great grandson. Also surviving is his sister, Ellen Clausen of Lamar, CO, and his sister in law Elva Root of Lamar, CO along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick Graduated from Chivington High School in 1948. He entered the USMC in November 1951 and was Honorably discharged in November 1954. Four years later, he entered the US Army in March 1958 and was honorably discharged again in March 1975. Dick saw service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars earning a Bronze Star in Vietnam along with numerous other service accommodations for his 20 years of honorable military service. He married Juanita Cochran September 17th, 1955 at Chivington, CO. After retiring from the military, Dick lived and worked in Wakefield, KS as the head of maintenance at the local nursing home, he was also a local plumber. Retiring in 1991 Dick & Juanita then traveled across the country in their RV. They spent the next 13 years visiting family and making new friends. In 2004 Dick & Juanita settled in Lamar, permanently parking their RV lifestyle to plant Roots back home on the eastern plains of Colorado.
Funeral services for Dickie Root were held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Eads with Pastor Roy Gueswel of the Lamar Community Church of the Nazarene officiating. Mrs. Betty Crow served as the pianist. Final committal services were held at the Eads Cemetery. Visitation and funeral services were entrusted to the care of the Brown Funeral Home in Eads.
