George D. Crow Obituary

Funeral services will be held for longtime Eads Businessman George D. Crow at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Eads. Mr. Crow died at Weisbrod Nursing Home in Eads. In leu of flowers, the family is requesting that contributions be made to the Eads School Alumni Association.

Burial will follow at the Eads Cemetery.


George David Crow who was known as the Man with a Golden Heart came into this world on April 27, 1914 and departed this life on March 30, 2010, after spending the last four years at the Weisbrod Memorial Nursing Home. Born to George Isaac and Jennie Belle Crow, he was one of 13 children.


George was a life long resident of Kiowa County who lived every day to the fullest. He graduated from Eads High School in 1933 and shortly thereafter married his lifelong love, Shirley Howell in March of 1935 in Herrington, Kansas. They lived happily throughout 60 years of marriage until her death on October 6, 1995. Three children were born of this union, Charles, Linda and Diana.


George was most well known for his compassionate spirit that permeated everything he did. He spent countless hours contributing to the community he loved, whether purchasing treats for the children or turkeys for the Eads Chamber of Commerce Christmas drawings. He always had his community at the forefront of his thoughts. Many of his community donations will be well remembered such as his sponsorship of a green at the Eads Golf and Country Club, as well as, his donation of the Crow-Luther Art Center to the Eads School District RE-1.


Aside from his humanitarian work he was also heavily involved in the community of Eads. During his life he served in many capacities; such as the Deputy Sheriff, City Council member and Kiowa County Commissioner. He was also recognized as the citizen of the year by the Eads Chamber of Commerce.


When he wasnt volunteering his time or energy, he was a keen businessman well know for his honesty and integrity. In 1954 he and his partner Joe Schmitt started Eastern Colorado Utility of which George was the original President later selling his portion of the business to Joe. Other business ventures included Eads Ready Mix, Schmitt and Crow Excavating, and Eads Building Supply all of which were successful for George and his Family.


George had an immense love for the game of basketball. Whether playing or watching his home team of Eads, there were very few games that he did not attend. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature and hunting. He also had a fondness for collecting antiques and traveling with the US 287 Highway Association.


Georges influence and love of his community can be seen in nearly every building, program and business in town.

George is survived by his brother, Richard Crow, sister- in- law, Lucille Crow and brother- in- law John Dixon. His children, Charles (Florris) Crow of Eads, Linda Gardner of Lakewood and Diana (Dale) Pierce of Delta. George is also survived by grand children, Kim (Tom)Richards, of Eads, Tammy Fesmire, of Pueblo, Charla Ferris (Dave Wall) of, Kit Carson, David Crow ( his fianc Janelle Randel) of Eads, Jacqueline Gardner, of Castle Rock, step grandchildren Sharon Pierce, of Delta, Debbie Nelson ( Bob )Arvada, and 15 great- grandchildren and 10 great- great- grandchildren. He is also survived by Jack Gardner and Betty Crow along with countless friends and other relatives. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his loving wife and 11 sisters and brothers.
