Mr. King died at the Denver Veterans Hospital in Denver.
One of Kiowa County's special and unique characters, George loved people and his greatest pleasure was to lending a helping hand and try to repair the broken. It meant even more to him if he could accomplish the job without it costing a high dollar. Before recycling and going green was vogue, George had already made it a way of life. I'm sure that many people have a memory or two of George having what they needed in an emergency.
Born February 2, 1942 in Eads, Colorado to G. Leslie (Les) and Alpha C. McCracken King, George went to school in Eads until his senior year when he went to live and work in Tribune Kansas. He graduated from Tribune High School in 1960 and entered the United States Army February 9, 1962. He was honorably discharged February 8, 1965, after which he worked for the U. S. Geological Survey. Later he married Diane Stuart and lived and worked for Pittsburg Platte Glass Co. in Coudersport , Pa. They had two children, Todd Allen and Jennifer Rebecca. In the 80's George and Diane separated and George returned to Eads. He worked maintaining the Kiowa County Fairgrounds in Eads and lived there until his death.
George was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Leo King and Robert (Bob) King and an infant niece Shanna Marie.
George enjoyed working with animals and always had several to care for. Needless to say they often became pets. He loved having chickens and especially liked having his eggs to sell. For him it was an opportunity to stay in touch with folks he cared about and enjoyed chatting with.People who knew George always have a story to tell about him. Some are funny, some are about his kindness, or are about how he was a go to guy. Since 2000, when not working with his friend Jack Dixon or visiting with his special friends George Ellicott and Mary Marble, George spent most of his spare time helping his sister Becky create and maintain the Hasty Retreat Bed and Breakfast in Hasty. He did a great job renovating the guest houses and was very proud of having been a part of the whole process. To his sister he was a real treasure. He had a way of helping you do more than you thought you could do and be more than
you expected to be. He could also give you a crash course in patience! George had to go at his own chosen speed, and many times stayed with a job until well into the night only the prospect of a card game or a night at the races had George quitting before it was really, really dark outside. George said family is important. George enjoyed being with family and loved nothing better than playing cards for hours. He also loved going to the stock car races. He wouldn't leave until the last race was
finished and he kept a close record of each race on his program.
George is survived by his children Todd & Jennifer; three grandchildren Jordan, Sebastian and Jacey; two sisters, RebeccaBeckyA.(Gary) Morgan of Denver/Hasty, CO and Bertha Bert (Lee) Bouldin of Brighton, CO; Three brothers James Jim (Doris) King of Siebert, CO, Elmer Red (Jennette) King of Burlington, CO and Thomas Tom (Janice) King of Eads, CO; fourteen nephews and five nieces, two
aunts Mable (Howard) Pickerell of Burlington, CO and Wilma Mast of Blooming Prairie, Minn. as well as many cousins and great nieces and nephews who couldn't bother to fathom generation he was just Uncle George.
Forever in our hearts, rest in peace George, we'll see you someday on the other shore.
