Harold "Vern" White Obituary
Harold Vern White, 78, died unexpectedly May 11. 2010, at his home in Kit Carson, CO. He was born November 27, 1931, to Harold and Edna (Getman) White at the family farm in Cheyenne County, CO. Vern attended Mount Pearl , a country school north of Kit Carson through 8th grade, and graduated from Kit Carson High School. He attended Lamar Junior College for one semester.
Vern served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953. He was stationed in Korea during the Korean War as a teletype operator. After the service, he worked at Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, Michigan. In 1962, he moved to Denver, CO. and eventually worked as a payroll administrator for Mountain Bell/US West/Quest telephone companies. He retired from there after 27 years but never retired from life, continuing to work as a handyman, active in his church ,a VFW member and traveling extensively.
The night before his death, he and his wife had just returned from a trip to Weston, Mo., to see family.
Vern loved his country, God and His creation. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed annual treks for 30 years to hunt elk with his daughters and friends Ray Newton and Lyman McKee. His ashes will be spread at their elk camp near Haystack Mountain. He hunted everything from buffalo to moose to prairie dogs and fished for trout, salmon, sturgeon and halibut. He also enjoyed serving as cook in buffalo camp for Hawes Ranch Outfitters, Ford, Ks.
Vern was active in the Rotary Club, National Rifle Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, South Sheridan Baptist Church of Denver, VFW Post 3411 and Flagler Baptist Church for many years. He also was a member of the Kit Carson High School Booster Club, Historical Society and the Alumni Association.
Vern was a devoted reader of Gods Word and loved to serve as a church greeter.
He was married to Margaret Peggy LaHaye for 32 years and they had four children. He later married Elsiemae Rumsey on August 5,1994, in Lamar. CO.
He is survived by his wife Elsiemae of the family home; two daughters, Yolanda Prentice and husband Steve of Chico, CA., Dawn Serougi and husband Samir of Lafayette, CO. two step sons Bill Butch Gaynor and wife Marcie, of Colton, OR. Calvin Gaynor and wife Nadene, of Kit Carson, CO. two step daughters, Tamie Hawes and husband Lee, of Ford, KS. Alesa Meschberger, and husband Max of Garden City, KS. A step son Daniel Bailes and his wife Tammy of Garden City,KS.
Vern had 8 grandchildren: Malia, Christopher, Jeffery, CarolAnn and Janae Prentice; and Meghan Rollins all of Chico, CA and Amanda and Brett Hoskins, both of Lafayette, CO. and one great-grandchild, Parker Rollins of Chico, CA.
Also surviving are 12 step-grand children: Tim, Luke, Hannah and Zach Gaynor and Heather Kofstad all of Oregon; Jeremy Gaynor of Kit Carson and Gloria Trosper of Eads, CO.: Justin Hawes, Weston, Mo., Shanna Goodman, Blue Springs, MO. And Cody Hawes, Wright, KS. ; Heather Bozarth of BonAire, GA.; Brandon Bailes, and Makenzie Meschberger, both of Garden City, KS.
And 10 step great-grandchildren. They are Katherine and Hailee Trosper of Eads, CO.; Emily, Braden, and Kyra Jo Gaynor of Kit Carson, CO.; Gabriel and Michael Kofstad, Silverton, OR.; and Emma and Isabelle Hawes, Weston, MO., and Ella Goodman of Blue Springs, MO.
He is also survived by two brothers, Larry White of Cibolo, TX. And Ronald White and his wife Shirley of Kit Carson, CO.; one sister Wands White of Vero Beach, FL.; and an aunt Geraldine McCormick, of Oshkosh, NE. and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ervina.
His funeral was held Saturday, May,15,2010 at the Church of the Redeemed, in Kit Carson, CO. with Reverend Alvin Wilkerson and Pastor Jimmy Nicks presiding. Following the service in the church, full military honors were presented by the Kit Carson VFW Post #3411 and Cheyenne Wells Post #9700.
