Helen Pauline (Burk) Scheierman passed away November 21, 2014 from a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Helen was born June 14, 1926 to Edmund Earl and Nellie May (McCrary) Burk on her grandparents homestead 22 miles southeast of Burlington, Colorado. She grew up in the Smokey Hill community, attending school there through the 9th grade. In the summer of 1941 a tornado demolished the school building, forcing her to transfer to Burlington High School where she graduated in 1944. During her high school years, she worked part time at the Mountain Bell telephone office to help finance her way through school. Following graduation, she began working at the Law Office of Thornton H. Thomas remaining there until 1946.
She was baptized and confirmed, as an adult, into Trinity Lutheran Church in 1942 by Pastor C. E. Kleber. After becoming a member, she played the piano for church services and Sunday school. She taught Sunday school as well as helping with Vacation Bible School for several years. At times she would travel with Pastor Kleber to Cheyenne Wells, where a mission church was being established and played the piano at the services.
She married Donald Scheierman September 16, 1945. After Don returned from his tour of duty with the United States Army, they moved to a farm north of Burlington where they began their lives and where she lived until her death. They were married for 69 years.
This union was blessed with four children: Luetta Faye (1947), Donna Kay (1950), Rodney Ray (1952) and Julie Maye (1961).
During her married life she worked at several different jobs to supplement the family income. Besides being a wonderful loving wife and mother, she enjoyed singing in the church choir, playing cards, sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery.
She was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Nellie Burk, infant sister Ruth Elaine Burk and Great Grandson Richard Wayde Hamar.
She is survived by her husband Don of the home, children Luetta Davis (Garold) of Bethune, Donna Cooper (Lee) of Burlington, Rod Scheierman (Terry) of Burlington and Julie Scheierman of Littleton, 11 grandchildren and 17 great grand children.
