Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Arapahoe Community Church in Arapahoe, Colorado. Burial will follow at the Arapahoe Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the William Kimmell VFW Post #9700 in Cheyenne Wells, CO.


Hugh M. Cole of Arapahoe, Colorado was born on February 11, 1921 in Burdett, Kansas to Myron J. and Anna Dawley Cole. Mr. Cole died on January 1, 2010 at St. Josephs Hospital in Denver, Colorado at the age of 88. Hugh grew up in western Kansas moving to the Sharon Springs area where he went to high school going into the Army prior to graduation. Hugh served his country from 1943 until 1947, serving in England during WW II. After returning from his second term in the Army, he lived and worked on the Reynolds Ranch until the death of the Reynoldss and the sale of the ranch. He then worked for several local ranchers and farmers, working with animals which he loved. He always had mules or horses and used them to pull hay racks or sleighs for the communities for schools and church activities. He was adopted by the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Wells communities who looked out for him and cared for him as their own until his death.


Hugh wanted to be remembered that he was honored with the Good Conduct medal for his service in the Army. Hugh was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9700 in Cheyenne Wells and served as the district Post Commander in 1972 and 1973. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Ray and Orville, 1 sister, Letha, 2 nephews and 2 nieces. He is survived by his brother John M. (Barbara) Cole of Palco, Kansas, his sister Edna Brunow of Holdrege, Nebraska, several nieces, nephews, cousins and several special friends and caregivers in the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Wells communities.
