Marvin Richardson passed away at home on July 18, 2012, with his family by his side. He had courageously battled bladder cancer for 2 years. He was born May 24, 1935, in Chivington, Co., to James and Lorene (Boyd) Richardson. He attended school in Chivington, Co from 1st grade thru 9th grade finishing his High School years in Eads.
In 1953 Marvin married Pattie (Dunlap), to this union 5 children were born, Debra, Brenda, Monte, Monica and Darla. Marvin & Pattie enjoyed nearly 59 years of marriage.
Born to rope but forced to work, Marvin worked at the Eldridge ranch 18 miles southwest of Eads. Seven years later they moved 7 miles east of Eads before they were able to purchase the current ranch in 1986 which is located 7 miles North of Eads. For 38 years Marvin and Pattie would work hard in the D & R Locker Plant, providing top quality service to the area. He believed in a strong work ethic and spent most of his adult life helping his friends and neighbors. Marvins true love was to raise high quality cattle and horses. He loved to go to the county fairs and watch his steers come to the top of their classes. He always wanted to help the kids do the best they could do and always offered help to them in any way that he could. The horses were a true joy to Marvin. Lots of children and young adults alike benefited from the horses that he raised. If a young person had the heart and desire to have a horse Marvin was there to help in anyway. He would take them under his wing to teach them the skills they needed. He spent many hours with his children, pushing calves and steers, for them to rope, setting up barrels, poles, holding goats, fixing what ever needed to be fixed. He was always extremely proud of his children as they competed in gymkhanas, Little Britches, High School Rodeo and on into college and beyond. He was a life time member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a member and president of the Eads roping club when it was going strong with many members. He will be remembered by many as they saw him lead the Kiowa County Fair Parade for nearly three decades. He had many faithful horses, one being his favorite, Cowboy. In 1984, a change was made, and Monte started leading the parade with him. Thru the years, three different sets of matching horses were used. He is survived by his wife, Pattie Richardson, his children, Debra (Dennis) Phelps, Monte (Lori) Richardson, Monica (Tom) Halde, Darla (Tom) White. His sisters, Marilyn (John) Roy, Karilyn Richardson, and Melodie Richardson, a sister-in-law, Sydney Richardson, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Lorene Richardson, a daughter, Brenda Richardson, a brother, Melvin Richardson, and a sister, Luella Richardson.
