Mildred Michael Obituary

Mildred Wilcox Michael was born on September 17, 1910 in Wallace County, Kansas where her parents Robert Leroy and Matilda Swendener Wilcox had first homesteaded. Her parents later moved to Lenora, Kansas, and this is where Mildred grew up and attended schools. Her mother passed away when Mildred was nine years old, therefore she assisted her dad in helping to raise her sister and brother.

On November 25, 1930 she married Ross D. Michael. They made their first home on a farm around Hill City, Kansas. Ross and Mildred had four children: Shirley, Carol, Leroy and Larry. She was truly a dedicated wife, mother, grandma and great grandma, but never got to meet her only great great granddaughter, Kyla, who is now one year old.

Mildred was most definately a homemaker, making childrens clothing, the best homemade cinnamon rolls in town, homemade noodles, cooking at the school lunch room and babysitting children in her home. Some parents preferred that she come to their home with the children ready for bed. Mildred loved doing things with her hands like quilting, making each of her grandchildren a quilt. Mildred did lots of crocheting and embroidering and really used her rug needle.

After her husband Ross died in 1974, she remained in the Lenora area before moving to Eads in 1983 to be near her son Larry and his family. Mildred was a member of the Eads United Methodist Church, and read her bible faithfully until her eyesight no longer allowed her to. Mildred died at the Weisbrod Nursing Home in Eads where she had been a resident for the last three years, on February 24, 2007. She is preceded in death by her husband Ross, her parents, her daughter Carol Griffey, her great grandson Dyson Rusher, her sister Bernice Teeter and her brother Everett Wilcox. She is survived by her daughter Shirley Britt of Norfolk, VA, her sons Leroy (Karan) of Arvada, CO and Larry and fiance Charla Dunlap of Eads, CO, one son-in-law Raymond Griffey of Ellinwood, KS one sister-in-law Ruby Wilcox of Colorado Springs, CO as well as 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mildred Michael were held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27th at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Eads, CO with Pastor Richard Zabriski and Rev. Gary Goettel officiating. Casketbearers were her grandsons: Clark Griffey, Jeff Griffey, Michael Britt, Bart Michael, Jamie Schoenhoff, Darrell Stolzenberger, Michael Sheets and Brett Rusher. Final committal services were held at the Lenora South Cemetery in Lenora, Kansas on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 1:00 p.m..
