Milton D. Reimer Obituary
Milton (Milt) Reimer, resident of Burlington, Colorado passed away March 17, 2014 at the age of 95.
Born February 20, 1919 on a farm at Medford, Oklahoma, Milt began working at a very young age and
soon worked outside of the home helping to support his beloved family in the community of Grant
County, Oklahoma. He held many great memories in his heart from that time and his great faith in God
developed strongly from that time.
In his twenties, he joined the Civilian Public Service where he performed work of national importance making significant contributions to forest fire prevention, erosion and flood control and medical science. When the CPS program ended in 1947, Milt traveled with construction crews building elevators and later working as a hired hand for farmers/ranchers. This is how he ended up in Colorado working for farmer/rancher William and Leona Schaal and where he met their lovely daughter, Betty Lou Schaal. He was quite sure Betty was the love of his life and they were married September 28, 1947 at the Hope Congregational Church North of Bethune. The next several years were almost a blur as their daughter, Fae, was born July 24, 1948 and Milt, Betty, and Fae move 9 times for work-related reasons until they settled down permanently in the town of Burlington in summer of 1957 so that Betty could teach third grade at Burlington Elementary School. That was about the time huge rocks were being placed at Bonnie Reservoir.
Milt truly loved the town of Burlington and worked hard to help the town grow and prosper. He helped with many projects in Burlington and became a self-employed farmer. He loved volunteering and helped with the construction, along with others, the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ located on Senter Avenue while enjoying the challenge shingling such a steep roof. Milt and Betty truly enjoyed the times they had at The First Christian Church. He also had great memories of the fairground when it was wooden with dirt floors underneath the stands where the church booth served ice cream and hamburgers to the public. He wasn't a bit afraid to tackle any job and was always inventing new ways to make the job a little easier and more fun. One cold winter he tried to build an ice-skating rink in a low area of land just north of Burlington. Of course, it didn't last very long, but he had fun doing it. He loved helping people.
Milt built a home for Betty and himself in 1976-1977 on the golf course and they were so happy with their accomplishments. Milt then even put in a couple of years as Kit Carson County Tax Assessor. The people he worked with were an enjoyment to him and his favorite saying developed at that time.."Oh, Joy". Milt and Betty took dance lessons and thoroughly enjoyed dancing together. When Betty retired in 1986, they continued working together to help others around town in many projects and helping their daughter build a home, shingling the roof and much more at age 73. Milt worked for a time for the Colorado Welcome Center driving his ''Grasshopper Mower" round and round and planting hundreds of flowers to spruce things up. Milt and Betty both worked as volunteer greeters at the Welcome Center for a time. They were a great help to each other.
Milt continued to volunteer helping Old Town to get established in the community. He and Betty put their whole hearts into the cleaning and repairing of the buildings located there. The School House,
Church, Depot, and the Sod House were his favorites. Milt was very proud of the crew of fine young men he led to lay the bricks at Old Town. His love for the idea of Old Town kept him persevering to make things right for the community. He met many wonderful people during those years.
Milton is survived by his beloved wife Betty, his daughter, Fae and her husband Darrel, grandson Shea and his wife, Elizabeth, great grandchildren, Makayla and Cole, his brother Ramon Reimer and wife Marion of Medford Oklahoma, sister Irma Krehbiel of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and sister-in-law Elsie Stafford of Manhattan, Kansas. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews whom he always considered his own.
Preceding Milt in death are his parents, Peter H. and Augusta Thimm Reimer, sister Arlene, brother Lee Reimer, brother-in-law, Kenneth Krehbiel, sister Edna Reimer, brother-in-law Bernard Reimer.
