Rosa Louise Schrammel born August 31, 1914, 13 miles southeast of Kit Carson, Colorado in the homestead dug-out, to George and Susan Schrammel. She was the 6th of 7 children. Rosa had 4 sisters, Elsa, Martha, Florence and Ella Ann and two brothers Walter and George. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on August 30 1915 in Kit Carson Colorado.
Rosa started grade school at a country school in the Herndon Kansas area. The Schrammels moved to Herndon in 1919 where she continued her education.
In 1924 the family moved to McCook, Nebraska.
In 1925, the family moved back to the homestead, south west of Kit Carson. The school years 1924 to 1925 were spent in Kit Carson. During 1926, 27, 28 she attended Country school. She graduated from high school in Kit Carson in 1933.
After graduating from nurses training at Mercy Hospital in 1936, Rosa worked as an Operating Room nurse at the Greeley hospital and was the Operating Room Nursing Supervisor in the Hospital in Laramie Wyoming.
In 1943 Rosa joined the Army reporting to Camp Phillips in Kansas. In October 1943 she left Camp Carson now known as Fort Carson for 3 years as a nurse overseas in the Pacific War Zone, South Sea to Philippines as a Surgical Operating Room Nurse. She helped organize an operating room in Luzon, Philippines. She was awarded the Pacific Service Metal, World War II Victory Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon.
In 1951 Rosa worked an Education Director at the West Nebraska Hospital School of Nursing in Gering Nebraska.
In 1954 Rosa returned to school to further her nursing career and graduating from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education.
After graduating Rosa was Director of Nursing Services at Mercy Hospital in Denver Colorado.
After the closing of the school of Nursing at Mercy Hospital she joined the Practical Nursing program at Saint Anthony Hospital retiring in 1973 when the hospital closed its Practical Nursing program after 42 years in nursing.
Rosa belonged to many Nurses Organizations, Nationally, State and Local. She was a life time member of the V. F. W.
Rosa returned to Kit Carson to care for her mother, the two of them enjoyed raising and caring for their flowers and yard. Rosa also spent time working in the Museum and the Senior Center.
In 2002, after a serious fall and injury to her wrist and other health concern she moved to the Koharts assisted living home in Kit Carson where she enjoyed her remaining years with visits from family and friends.
Rosa died May 25th 2009 in the Keef Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne Wells after a short illness.
Funeral services for Rosa Schrammel were held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Kit Carson with Pastor Martin Davis officiating. Mrs. Jane Borns was the organist and Ms Doris Lessenden was the vocalist. Casketbearers were: Charles Oswald, Bill Kent, Victor Gibbs, Roger Evans, Kenneth Bergman and Chester Bergman. Honorary casketbearers were: Fred Beuck, Park A. Wood, Luke McCain, Scott Boehm, Park G. Wood and George Lee Wurm. Final committal services with full military honors by the Kit Carson VFW Post #3411 were held at the Kit Carson Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Kit Carson. Friends and family can sign the guest book and register online condolences at www.brownfuneraldirectors.com. Visitation and funeral services were entrusted to the care of Brown Funeral Home in Kit Carson, CO.
