Rosamond Pollreis Obituary
Rosamond (Harwig) Pollreis was born January 8, 1913 near the small town of Crab Orchard, Nebraska, the oldest child of Thomas Anthony and Mattilda (Oldenberg) Harwig. At around 4 years old she moved with her parents and 2 brothers to a farm south of Ogallala, Nebraska where she attended a country school for her first year. Then the family moved into Ogallala where she had to take first grade over again. She then also completed the second grade while in Ogallala.
In 1921 another brother joined the family in March. That spring they were all loaded into their model T Ford to travel to Mountain Home, Arkansas, to farm a rocky farm where they learned to hoe cotton and to pick it into a long sack that dragged behind as they walked.
In her mid-term of fifth grade her parents decided three years was enough of the South. They sold out, packed up the model T to come west to rent a farm northeast of Sheridan Lake, Colorado. She and her brothers attended grade school at New Home School near there.
In mid-term of the eighth grade the family moved farther west to rent the farm belonging to George Luther southwest of Eads, Colorado. She and her brothers finished high school at Eads.
Rosamond went to Greeley Teachers College for one year. While she was away at school her parents purchased a place northeast of Eads. When she returned home she worked around for two years and had met Paul Pollreis whom she married in 1935. He had been working on the David Oswald ranch southeast of Kit Carson. They continued farming for the ranch for another year. Along with her husband they rented and farmed a place southeast of Kit Carson. A son, Phillip Paul was born here. A daughter, Shirley Jean, joined the family in 1944 after they had moved to the George Pollreis homestead place farther southeast of Kit Carson.
She and husband Paul retired to live in Kit Carson in August 1973 after selling their ranch, cattle and machinery.
Rosemond died on September 14, 2009 at the Weisbrod Memorial Nursing Home in Eads at the age of 96 years, 8 months and 6 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents , one grandson, her husband Paul on January 30, 1984, and in 1993 by daughter Shirley (Dennis) Matthews, one brother Paul Harwig and a sister-in-law Esther Harwig.
Rosamond is survived by son Phillip Paul (Madonna) Pollreis of Eads, CO, grandchildren Dawn (Charles) Belreal, Henry Pollreis, Raymond Pollreis, Kimberly (Troy) Garnhart, Kelly Hasker and Kyla Matthews. She is survived by her great grandchildren Henry Pollreis Jr., Abigail, Kennedy and Kori Garnhart, Stephanie and Crista Belreal, by her great great grandchildren Mykenna and Kalisa Belreal as well as by her brothers Lawrence and Albert Harwig, sister-in-law Bea Harwig and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
