Ruth Opal Wissel Obituary

Ruth O. Wissel, of Eads, Colorado died October 16, 2011 at the Weisbrod Memorial Hospital in Eads.


She was born on March 17, 1917 in the Prairie Queen community, northwest of Eads. She was the daughter of Edwin and Rella (Barr) Buck. She was the oldest sister, out of a total of 6 siblings.


She received her education at the South Star and Prairie Queen schools, and graduated from Eads High School with the class of 1934.


After High School graduation she was employed by the Eads National Bank.


Ruth married Ward Wissel on April 26, 1936, at the United Brethren Church in Eads. They were married for over 67 years. They had three children, Raymond, Betty and Glenn. They made their home in the Prairie Queen community farming and ranching. In August 1964, Ward and Ruth bought a home in Eads, where she resided until her passing.


Ruth worked in the Kiowa County Public Library from 1961 to 1989, holding various positions including Librarian. That is where she fostered her love of books. Her interests were reading all kinds of books. She had a large collection of classic books. She also made many quilts, Afghans, and things made with a needle and thread. She made well over 50 quilts. She also enjoyed being with her family and friends.


She was a member of the Kiowa Rebecca Lodge #85 for 55 years. During her 55 years, she held every office in the Lodge. Through the Rebecca Lodge she helped prepare and serve many meals for various functions in the community.


When the Kiowa Rebecca Lodge in Eads closed, she transferred her membership to the Ida B. Hiles Rebecca Lodge O, in Canon City, Colorado. She was the Past President of the LAPM Lodge of Colorado.


She was a member of the Eads CO-OP and the United Methodist Church of Eads, where she served on several committees.


She was preceded in death by her husband Ward, daughter Betty, son Glenn, her parents Edwin and Rella Buck, brothers Keith Buck, Amis Buck and Clyde Buck, his wife Elsie, sister Mary Lea Wissel, brothers in law Paul, Burrel, Keith and Duane Wissel, and several nieces and nephews.


She is survived by her son Raymond and his wife Shirley of Rock Springs, Wyoming; four grandchildren Connie Koritnik, Scott (Mary) Wissel, Brenda Kruljac, Melissa (Jason) Sherman, all of Rock Springs, Wyoming. 7 Great Grandchildren, 6 Great Great Grandchildren, one sister, Ruby Wissel of Eads, Colorado, one sister in law, Evelyn Buck of San Diego, California, and several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Ruth O. Wissel were held on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Eads, Colorado, with Pastor Nancy Peacock officiating.


Love Liebl and Nancy Walker provided the music. Sylvia Weeks and Mary Eikner sang Just a Closer Walk With Thee and It Is No Secret. Serving, as pallbearers were Terry Eder, Terry Laird, Marty Barnett, Bill Barlow, Tim Weeks, and Cardon Berry.


Final committal services were held at the Eads Cemetery.
