Vercene Walker Obituary

Vercene Irleane Pettijohn Walker was born July 6, 1928 in Sparks, Nevada to Cash and Ermma Pettijohn. When they came to Kiowa County they lived south of Eads close to the lakes. She knew the Simmons and Oslen families. She was raised in a foster home from 5 years to 19 years of age. They were Mr. and Mrs. H. H Hooker Northeast of Chivington, Colorado. Their son Gene Hooker couldn't remember Vercene so she got the nickname of "Peggy". Vercene had one brother and two sisters whom have passed on.

Vercene learned at an early age that working hard was the thing to do. You work and get things done then there was time to play. She attended the First Christian Church in Eads where she taught Sunday school, and helped with dinners and helped where there was a need. She graduated from Eads in 1947. She had great stories that happened in school with her friends. She and Gene Culver climbed the water tower. She had fun with her classmates in school and during all the years after she kept in contact with her classmates.

She married her wonderful husband, Robert Kenneth Walker June 8, 1947 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They lived in Eads where they built the house at 1306 Rittgers St. They had one son, Robert Eugene Walker, and his sweet wife Nancy of Eads. Peggy had three wonderful grandchildren: Melinda M. Wallick, Jennifer A. Walker, and Brandon L Walker and two great-grandsons: Xavier Walker and Benjamin Wallick.

Vercene loved the mountains and all the beautiful things that God put there. She loved Jesus and talked to Him every day. She had so many blessings and knew He forgave her of her sins. She loved little children and older people. Her cookies and bread were enjoyed by one and all where ever she lived.

She worked for 20 + years for School District 3 in Security-Widefield. She enjoyed each of her drivers and anyone who came through the door of Transportation.

I have had more than my share of wonderful friends. I hope I have left a few good words for each one as I loved them all. Vercene wrote this obituary. She stayed helpful when she was the Holly care center. She had a sweet spirit about her to the end. The Lord was with her always.

Vercene was preceded in death by son Robert E. Walker October 5, 2009 and husband Robert Kenneth Walker September 5, 2010.
