Verna Edna Jones was born on March 6, 1923, to Arthur and Florence Jones in Telluride, Colorado. With her six brothers and sisters, she grew up along Cherry Creek near Durango.


Verna married Milton Fox on March 6, 1941, and they made their home near Cortez. They had three children: Alice, Nina, and Arthur.


Milton rode ditch for the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company and Verna would drop him and his horse off each morning, then head home to do the chores. When Milton opened the Fox Saddle Shop in 1959, Verna worked alongside him waiting on customers, weaving mohair breast collars and cinches, and cleaning saddles. She was a 4-H leader for a number of years.


Verna moved to Chivington, CO, with Art and his family in 1995. She stayed active by enjoying her grandchildren, gardening, canning, and continuing to make breast collars and cinches. She accepted Christ as her personal savior in 1997 while she was visiting Nina and Alice in Cortez and attended church as long as she was able.


Verna passed away on July 18 at Weisbrod Nursing Home in Eads. Graveside services were held on July 23 at the Arriola Cemetary near Cortez.


Survivors include children Nina (Therald) Estes and Art (Sue) Fox, grandchildren Zane (Linda) Odell, Jube (Sharleen) Odell, and Chad (Carla) Odell, Virginia (Jetson) McKinney, Cindy (Cliff) Baier, Cody (Annie) Fox, Erin (Garrett) Keller, and Tyler and Jake Fox, 11 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother Grover Jones, her sister Vera Roberts, and numerous nieces and nephews.


Memorial contributions may be made to Weisbrod Nursing Home or Prairie Pines Assisted Living in Eads, CO.
