Wayne joined the United States Army on January 20, 1944 and was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946 after serving his country honorably in the Philippines. Wayne was united to Barbara Ann Sallee on December 28, 1947 in Eads, Colorado. Wayne and Barbara were blessed with one son, Dennis on December 17, 1948.

After serving his country, Wayne returned to Kiowa County where he farmed and ranched until the late 1960s. He was appointed and then duly elected as the Kiowa County Clerk and Recorder. During his time as County Clerk and Recorder, Wayne was elected as President of the Colorado County Clerks Association in 1986. On January 1, 1992, Waynes beloved Barbara Ann died after a courageous battle with cancer. In 1996, he was inducted as a charter member into the Colorado Babe Ruth Baseball Association Hall of Fame.

Wayne served the Kiowa County community as an ambulance driver for over 20 years. The care and oversight of the ambulances was Waynes passion. They were washed and cleaned, literally every time they went out. Wayne also served for many years on the Kiowa County Hospital District Board of Directors, many of those years as chairman. Waynes reputation for perfection was well known by everyone. In 1995, Wayne became a member of the Brown Funeral Home staff family. Wayne continued to serve families in funeral service until just a few weeks prior to his death. Wayne was a member in good standing in the American Legion Post for 64 years. He loved to fish, work with wood, spend time with his family and friends and do his gardening. Wayne also served on the Kiowa County Draft Board for many years.

Wayne was a beloved Pa, Granddad, brother, uncle and friend. Wayne was a man who loved his home county, and the friends and family that he had. He was a man of integrity who committed his life to the service of others. Waynes investment into the lives of others cannot possibly be measured. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
