William (Bill) Leevurne Wood

March 9, 1951 - February 12, 2009

Longtime Kit Carson, Colorado resident William (Bill) Leevurne Wood passed away on February 12, 2009 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was 57 years old.

Bill was born William Leevurne Wood on March 9, 1951 in Lamar Colorado. His parents were Park Beardsley, and Florence Theresa (Schrammel) Wood. He was the youngest of two boys. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Kit Carson, Colorado.

Bill attended Kit Carson Public School from Kindergarten to 12th grade graduating in 1969. He went on to further his education at Trinidad Community College and graduated with an Associates of Science degree in gun smithing.

Bill married Alta Irene Bailey on July 14, 1971 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kit Carson, Colorado. To this union one daughter was born, Tonya Lynn.

Bill enlisted in the Colorado National Guard in 1971 and served his country for 10 years. He owned and operated Bill's Gun Shop and worked for the Town of Kit Carson as a Town Marshall for several years. He moved his family to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado to work for the Cheyenne County Sheriff Department, and also attended CLETA law enforcement training in Golden, Colorado. Moving back to Co-own the family business Wood Automotive with his older brother Park G. Bill was also a volunteer EMT and Fireman for many years. In 1983, Bill moved his family to Otis, Colorado to again pursue his career in law enforcement. He was elected Sheriff of Washington County in 1988 as a write-in candidate, and was recognized by Governor Roy Romer as the first write-in candidate in Colorado history to win any election with such a large margin, by 1501 votes. Bill was a talented machinist and had invented a bullet resizing die for cast lead bullets, and also received a U.S. Patent for it as well. He was very proud of this. In 1994, Bill retired from law enforcement and moved his family back to Kit Carson to be near his aging parents.

Bill Married Naomi Beek on May 30, 2002 in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Naomi brought to this union a son Keene and a daughter was born to this union Trista.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, and grandparents; Park Hudson & Kate (Beardsley) Wood and George & Susan Schrammel.

Bill is survived by his wife Naomi, son Keene, and daughter Trista of Kit Carson, Colorado. Daughter Tonya (Aaron) Wilson, of Boise City, Oklahoma, Granddaughters Shaelynn, Lauren, and Grandson Benjamin. Brother Park G. (Bonnie) Wood of Lamar, Colorado. Aunts, Addie Burtnett of St. Joseph, Missouri, Rosa Schrammel, of Kit Carson, Colorado, Ella Ann Beuck, of Hugo, Colorado, and Anna Marie Wood, of Denver, Colorado, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.


Funeral services were held at on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Kit Carson High School in Kit Carson, Colorado. Burial followed at the Kit Carson Cemetery.
